FAQ

What is a Commercial Drivers’ License (CDL)?

A person who holds a commercial driver's license (CDL) is permitted to drive certain types of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs). Three types of CDLs, each for a specific set of motor vehicles, are established by federal criteria.

Class A: Any combination of vehicles having a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of at least 26,001 pounds is classified as Class A, as long as the gross vehicle weight rating of the vehicle or vehicles being towed exceeds 10,000 pounds. Tractor trailers are a couple of examples.

Class B: Any single vehicle with a GVWR of at least 26,001 pounds, or any such vehicle pulling another vehicle whose GVWR does not exceed 10,000 pounds, falls under the classification of Class B (Heavy Straight Vehicles). Coach buses and transit buses are two examples.

Class C: Any vehicle or group of vehicles that are not included in Classes A or B that is used to transport hazardous materials or sixteen passengers or more, including the driver. Vans that seat sixteen people are an example.

Who qualifies for a Commercial Drivers’ License (CDL)?

To obtain your CDL, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Individuals must be 18 years or older.

  • Possess a valid driver's license (or learner’s permit) for your corresponding state.

  • Pass the CDL written exam.

  • Get a medical exam and/or physical.

  • Get fingerprinted by law enforcement or an authorized third-party provider.

  • Take the skills on-road test and pay the necessary fees.
